Florida Department of Education / FLORIDA LEARNING NETWORK

The Department of Education recently completed the production of an interactive web based tutoring program that we hope will be helpful to your students for mastering the Sunshine State Standards and providing homework assistance.

The Florida Learning Network, http://www.fllearningnetwork.com, provides students homework help when they need it. Whether students are struggling with subject-related concepts or need assistance with weak skill areas, tutors are available through the convenience of the Internet. Students can connect with a tutor from home, after-school programs, the library—anywhere there is an Internet connection.

Florida Learning Network is a collection of online resources for students in grades K-12. Tutoring and guidance in accordance with Sunshine State Standards is provided for mathematics, science, reading, and social studies at no cost.

Florida Learning Network provides students with these resources:

  • Real-time, online tutoring through an electronic whiteboard provided by trained tutors
  • a whiteboard is a place where students and tutors can interactively ask and answer academic questions in writing
  • Searchable educational content designed to assist with homework and projects
  • Monitored bulletin board with educational content provided by students, mentors, parents, and teachers
  • Links to select educational Web sites

Tutoring hours are Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time and Central Time for K-5 grades and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time and Central Time for grades 6-12.  Help desk hours are from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Information containing the registration process for teachers and district administrators will be emailed later this week.  Students, parents, and librarians can register at any time.  Students under 13 must have parental permission to participate in the tutoring sessions.  Only students can participate in the tutoring sessions but parents can link to their student and view saved tutoring sessions.

Special Health Notice

With all the current news about Staph and MRSA (methycillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections in the news, Orange County Public School district would like to give you some important information about this bacteria, its causes and its treatment:

What is Staph?
Staph is a type of bacteria.  It may cause skin infections that look like pimples or boils.  Skin infections caused by Staph may be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage.

Who gets Staph infections?
Anyone can get a Staph infection.  People are more likely to get a Staph infection if they have:

  • Skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a Staph infection
  • Contact with items and surfaces that have Staph on them
  • Openings in their skin such as cuts or scrapes
  • Poor hygiene

How are Staph infections treated?
Treatment for a Staph skin infection may include taking an antibiotic or having a doctor drain the infection.

How do we keep Staph infections from spreading?

  • Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Keep your cuts and scrapes clean and cover them with bandages
  • Do not touch other people’s cuts or bandages
  • Do not share personal items like towels, razors, or sports equipment

OCPS is encouraging students and staff to practice good hand-washing techniques and to wash their hands often.  Custodians are doing their part to keep our schools clean.  Please follow up at home as well, that all students can remain healthy and infection free. Thank you.

Speak Out Hotline

(a•non•y•mous) adj:

A person not identified by name or location: an anonymous letter; an anonymous phone call. No names, no faces.

SpeakOut Hotline History

On September 29, 1995, a fourteen-year old Tavares Middle School student was shot by another student. During the investigation it was determined that several students attending the Lake County school were aware of a conflict between the victim and shooter and yet never spoke with school administrators or resource officers. It was also discovered that several students were aware that the student had brought the gun to school. This incident was the catalyst brought about the development of the SpeakOut Hotline.

Why Should I Call?

We need your help to improve the safety and security of your school and community. By calling, you can help stop a friend from committing suicide, get another student off drugs, or stop a bully from making other people miserable. If you have information about the following topics, please call. Call us! 800-226-7733.

TIME TO COME TO SCHOOL ...?

It has come to our attention that many of our students arrive to school prior to 9:00 a.m.  Florida Statue 1003.31 requires that the school system provides supervision for students 30 minutes before the school day begins and 30 minutes after the school day ends.

Our official school start time is 9:30 a.m. and our dismissal time is 3:50 p.m.  Students should not arrive to school prior to 9:00 a.m.  The safety of students represents the primary concern.

Our goal is to ensure that all of our students arrive and leave school safely and that adequate supervision is available during their arrival and departure.  Thank you for your cooperation in playing your role to help our school team provide a safe and positive learning environment for all students.
